Caronia Nail Polish: Unsafe

Wednesday, July 18, 2012

I've been looking at the ingredients of my nail polishes just a while ago (Yes, I should've checked before I bought) and I saw that Caronia has some or all of the harmful ingredients we should all avoid in nail polishes/ nail care products. These are the big 3 - toluene, formaldehyde, and dbp (dibutyl phthalate).

Read a short description on the harmful effects of these 3 here.  Do more research if you want.

Bottomline: these 3 should not be in your nail products.

Bobbie claims to be free of these ingredients so I'd go with that brand if I were you.

I just hope that institutions here in the Philippines actually check which products are safe for use and if product claims about ingredients being safe are actually true.

Here's another one of those sites where you can get to know more about the products you are using:

Good Guide

They rate each product from 1 to 10 (10 being the highest) in 3 categories: Health, Environment, and Society. Click here to find out how they go about rating the products.

I already told you about COSDNA and EWG's Skin Deep Cosmetics Database. Links on the left! :)

Human Nature 100% Natural Hand and Foot Salve

Wednesday, July 11, 2012

RATING: 4.5/5

MY TWO CENTS' WORTH: I love this more than their original Hand and Foot Salve just because of the yummy strawberry scent! I also love the packaging more because the original tub is less convenient to use. I love how this product makes my hands and feet so smooth! This is good for people with cracked heels, so it says on the label. I can't really say much about that because my heels aren't cracked, just a little rough, but I can definitely say that with just the initial use, my feet became softer!

Pros:
- easy to use
- yummy strawberry scent (i like it but i like the berry bliss body cream scent more)
- make my hands softer and smoother
- non-sticky feel

Cons:
- not as moisturizing as other hand creams but it does a pretty decent job!

WOULD I REPURCHASE: As soon as my supply runs out! I've also already influenced my mom into using this!

WOULD I RECOMMEND IT?: 100% go BUY it here now! I think Human Nature now accepts international buyers. :) Check their site out! Link is on the left!

Check How Harmful Your Fave Products Are

I told you about COSDNA in my previous post. It's this website that posts ingredients of some of the products we use.

Well, I found another one! Skin Deep Cosmetics Database. They rate how hazardous products are. In my opinion, it's much more informative than COSDNA but COSDNA has stuff that Skindeep doesn't have, like Skinfood and other Asian brands.

Check them out, ok! Research on harmful ingredients! Check labels! Be Aware! Be Safe!

I just found out some of my favorite products have Parabens!

I recently discovered this site, COSDNA, which posts the ingredients of most cosmetics available in the market and I decided to check out the ingredients of my Skinfood Peach Sake BB Cream. Of course, I couldn't really read the ingredients before at the back of the product since it's in Korean so I had no idea what I'm putting on my face. I just knew that Skinfood uses natural ingredients so I was favoring it from other brands.

I really like Skinfood so maybe I was ignoring the fact that they don't advertise themselves as 100% natural. Of course, saying they "we use natural ingredients" is not the same as "we ONLY use natural ingredients." So anyway, after years of almost everyday use, I was finally able to check out the ingredients and I JUST FOUND OUT IT HAS PARABENS!

For those of you who aren't familiar with the controversy surrounding Parabens in cosmetics, read THIS article. Summary: Parabens are used as preservatives to increase the shelf life of cosmetics. This is so widely-used and is present in almost everything we use on a regular basis. It has been linked to breast cancer.

Another product I use regularly is Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. I thought I was doing my skin a favor by using a gentle, unscented cleanser for my face, but, apparently, I was harming myself with this product, which also has parabens, along with other harmful ingredients.

Other harmful ingredients I was able to research came from here. I must say, when I saw the ingredients, I was shocked at how almost everything at our house contains these baddies. Please check out that link and do more research on what ingredients are harmful, why they are harmful, and what names they are usually under when listed as ingredients. Everyone, we must start the habit of CHECKING THE LABELS of the products we are using.

So now, I have the dilemma of finding a replacement for my Skinfood bb cream. I use it daily after moisturizing and I use it as my foundation because I only need light coverage. Plus it has spf 20, and I don't get pimples. Hmph. Someone help me! I have oily and sensitive skin and I need something that provides the stuff I just enumerated. I need to stop using my Skinfood bb cream. I love it but why would I risk it? Search is now on for my new moisturizer/foundation/sunblock!

Check your favorite products now!! What do they contain? Know more harmful ingredients? Tell me all about it! All comments are much appreciated.
